" 9.—Black: head and thorax punctured : abdomen finely punctured: vertex about the ocelli tuberculated : face with two narrow abbreviated white lines on inner orbits: labram white: antennae black, apex of joint three, and fourth and fifth above marked with white: legs black, apex of femora and line on tibiae above, white: basal half of wings hyaline, apical half fuscous, costa obscure, a small spot near apex of stigma and the tip hyaline, stigma black Length 7J lines. " 3—Antennae simple, black, a small white spot in front of joints three and four near tips: face with iwo small transverse white lines extending from the fore inner margin of the eyes: knees and front of all the tibiae white: abdomen with a small triangular white spot at tip above: wings not so strongly coloured as in 9, but with dame arrangement of colour on submarginal vein and in submarginal cell. Length 5 lines." Individuals vary in length from 10 to 15 mm. (0'42-0'60 inch), and frequently lack the white spots on the face, or have the abdomen red except one or more basal segments. This species, although widely distributed, is rare in collections, and as specimens vary in coloration (chiefly of the abdomen), it has been several times redescribed, and when Cresson's "Catalogue" was published (1887) four species were recognized, viz.: 0. Sayi, Westwood, O. affinis, Harris, O. occidentalis, Cresson, and 0. lerminalis, Newman. Ab",ut the same time I published in 'The Canadian Entomologist' (vol. six., pages 80-86) observations regarding the habits of these insects, and endeavoured to show that there was in reality only one species.
