Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. THE PERIOD OF TRANSITION. The Fate of the Holy City That Had Become Unholy. Alas! The Holy City whose very stones were dear to those that loved her, was holy no longer. The Son of Man had foretold this, the greatest of all tribulations. "For when He drew nigh, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, 'If thou hadst known in this day, even thou, the things which belong unto peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, when thine enemies shall cast up a bank about thee and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall dash thee to the ground, and thy children with thee: and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.'" (Luke 19: 41-44.) While on His last weary journey, Jesus turned unto the weeping women who were following Him and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves and for yourchildren. For behold the days are coming, in which they shall say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts that never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us: and to the hills, Cover us.'" (Luke 23: 28-30.) Jesus had already declared that "except those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved: but for the elect's sake, those days shall be shortened." (Matt. 4:22.) Paul, having this great tribulation in mind, advised a temporary suspension of marriage and that those that had wives be as though they had none. (I Cor. 7.)
