Frank Taylor was born in 1911 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, to become the fourth and last generation of the Taylor clan to run a town centre business which has, in its time, dealt in stationery, printing, catering and fancy goods, since as long ago as 1848. These are some of his superbly illustrated memories of the first 70 years, from bad times to good times, spanning a major world war and the development of modern technology. A quiet and modest man, this book was written (and sketched) to record a stationer’s life and observations through the twentieth century, and to entertain the following generations of his family. It is an extraordinary story of an ordinary man, initially coerced into the family’s struggling business at the age of fourteen, and having developed the business after his father’s untimely death, being suddenly transferred into the alien world of war, India, and wireless telegraphy: then back again to family life and the ’shop’, and finally into a busy retirement and further adventures. Frank Taylor is now 94 years young and still lives in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, with his second wife Joan.   show more
